Every natural stone surface starts as a sawn face — cut by a diamond wire saw or gang saw from the quarried block. That sawn surface is the raw starting point. From there, finishes are produced by applying one or more processes:
- Mechanical abrasion — grinding and polishing the surface with progressively finer abrasive pads
- Thermal treatment — exposing the surface to intense heat (flaming) to open the texture
- Chemical treatment — applying acid to etch the surface and create texture or an aged effect
- Tumbling — rotating the stone in a drum with abrasive media to round edges and wear the surface

- Blasting — propelling sand, water, or other media at the surface under pressure

How to Choose the Right Finish for Your Project
For interior flooring — dry areas
Polished and honed are the standard choices. Polished gives maximum visual impact and is easiest to clean. Honed is safer in areas with bare feet (bathrooms, spa environments) and gives a quieter, more contemporary look. Both require regular sealing and pH-neutral cleaning.
For exterior paving in wet climates
Sandblasted, tumbled, or acid tumbled are the safest choices. Polished is not suitable — it becomes dangerously slippery when wet. For northern European climates (Netherlands, UK, Germany, Sweden), tumbled and sandblasted are the industry standard for a reason: they perform well in rain, frost, and heavy foot traffic over many years.
For pool surrounds
Sandblasted is the preferred finish — consistent, non-slip, and resistant to pool chemicals. Avoid polished entirely. Tumbled works but sandblasted gives more reliable slip performance in wet conditions. Ensure the stone is correctly sealed and that the specific product has been tested for frost resistance if in a cold climate.
For wall cladding and feature panels
Split face and rock face give the most dramatic natural effect. For interior feature walls, honed or polished cladding creates a sleeker, more refined look. Bush hammered works well for exterior architectural cladding where a raw, robust texture is desired.
For garden paths and informal paving
Crazy paving and tumbled formats are ideal. They look immediately established, age naturally, and their irregular texture is both practical (slip-resistant) and visually sympathetic to garden settings. Acid tumbled gives a more pronounced aged character if that is the desired aesthetic.
For stairs and step treads
Honed is the safest choice for interior stairs. For exterior steps, sandblasted or bush hammered provides the grip required. A common specification for exterior steps is a sandblasted or honed tread with a tumbled or chiselled front edge (the drop face) — combining safety on the walking surface with a more decorative finished edge.

The most common mistake end users make with natural stone is using acidic cleaners — vinegar, lemon-based products, bathroom limescale removers. These permanently etch and dull polished and honed surfaces, and can accelerate surface degradation on tumbled and acid tumbled stone. Always specify pH-neutral stone cleaners.

- Always request a physical sample in the specified finish before committing to a container order. Finish descriptions and photos do not fully convey the tactile and visual character of the actual stone.
- Finish availability varies by stone type — not every finish is available on every stone. Confirm with your supplier before specifying.
- Mixing finishes within a project is common and effective — for example, honed field tiles with a polished border, or sandblasted paving with a mosmar-edged pool coping.
- Pricing varies by finish. Polished typically carries a small premium over honed. Specialist finishes like flamed and bush hammered also carry a premium. Tumbled and sandblasted are generally the most cost-effective exterior finishes.
